The new HOKA Mach 7 is positioned as a lightweight training shoe for fast miles, but I have to say, it feels good going slowly, too. After about three weeks running in this shoe, it's easily the first choice in my current, three-shoe rotation, no matter what type of run I'm opting for that day.
I won't throw shade on the other two models; they're meant for different things. What sets the Mach 7 apart is that it feels so light and snappy, putting it on has the effect of ingesting a gel or piece of candy: It's suddenly energizing and makes you want to get out and move around.
The super-critically foamed midsole material in the Mach 7 is responsive, but not at all heavy, and provides enough protection that back-to-back everyday runs don't leave my legs feeling heavy from the repeated landings. The combination of this foam and the rocker profile is peppy enough to make one double-check if HOKA has slipped a plate into this model on the sly. (They haven't.)
That rocker shape, which accelerates transitions to toe-off, is done right. Some go-fast shoes with an aggressive forward roll can impart the sensation of your foot falling off a ledge. Not the Mach 7. The ample foam under the forefoot in the Mach 7, combined with a sticky rubber outsole, gives me the feeling of leverage, or having plenty to push against to propel myself forward.
One final feature adding to the appeal of the HOKA Mach 7 is the snug, secure fit of the upper. An unobtrusive, flat tongue design and an internal gusset accentuate the locked-in feel of the shoe.
Some reviewers have noted that the Mach 7 is a little on the narrow side, but I haven't had any problems with the shoe volume—and this is coming from someone who sometimes has to get creative with laces to expand the room in a standard-width shoe.
Portland Running Company will be hosting a special edition of our Thirsty Thursday run on May 7 when you can come wear-test the Mach 7 for yourself. Expect refreshments and giveaways.
