Flanked by the Columbia River and Portland International Airport, a paved bike path runs alongside Northeast Marine Drive. Mt. Hood rises high above everything, providing a great view for the cyclists, runners, and walkers here.
With planes flying low overhead, expect more noise than a peaceful cruise through Forest Park. Depending on the day, you can encounter some pretty strong resistance, too, as you begin your run straight into the wind that flushes the Columbia River Gorge.
I recommend Marine Drive on a sunny, clear day; it’s a great reminder that we live in such a beautiful place.
Park at Broughton Beach Park, a popular boat ramp, at 4141 NE Marine Drive. Pick up the path near the parking lot's east end, and head east toward Mt. Hood.
If you reach I-205 (about 4 miles), the path veers away from the river and continues next to I-205 for miles and miles.
No matter how long you are going, it’s a great feeling to turn around and run like the wind.
